Because of the rapid growth of its computer touchscreen business, Elo TouchSystems today announced plans for adding production capacity and expanding its operations in the Silicon Valley. Over the next 18 months it will also transfer operations from its facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn., to the Silicon Valley.
“Our touchscreen business is growing rapidly, and our need for expansion has presented us with the opportunity to streamline and consolidate operations into one location,” said Robert Roeser, president of Elo TouchSystems. “The move will enable Elo to improve production efficiency and respond to its customers with more cost-competitive touchscreen products in a timely and efficient manner.”
“For Elo, one of the world’s leading suppliers of computer touchscreens, the Silicon Valley is the best location in which to continue advancing and developing this technology,” Roeser added.
Roeser also pointed out that Elo’s parent company, Raychem Corporation, is actively engaged in research and development on touchscreen technology at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. “We expect continued support from Raychem, and we need to be near its laboratories,” he said.
Elo is in the process of finding additional space near its Silicon Valley headquarters. The move will eliminate approximately 200 jobs in Tennessee while leading to expanded employment in California. Elo plans to offer severance packages along with outplacement services to those who remain in Tennessee. In addition, employees will be given incentives to help the company through the transition period, according to company officials. Plant employees were notified of the move by management today.
Elo, which manufactures and supplies AccuTouch® 5-wire resistive and IntelliTouch® surface wave touchscreens, as well as integrated touch monitors, will begin transferring manufacturing for its AccuTouch product lines from Tennessee to California within nine months. Throughout the transition, the company is committed to continuing excellent customer service and on-time delivery performance, Roeser noted.
